Frequently Asked Questions
Won’t I save money by doing it myself? It really comes down to what your time is worth. If your business allows the spare time, and only a few systems, probably so. If you can use that time to generate profit, or have a large network, then it’s much harder to realize any savings by doing your own support.
Can you build me cheap PCs? Can I build you a PC — sure. Will it save you money — no, I can’t compete with Dell. I will be happy to help you develop configurations that best meet your needs, and locate vendors offering the best pricing and warranty.
So, what do I want? A mid-level Pentium-D or low level Athlon64 X2, 1Gb of RAM, 80Gb drive, budget AGP/PCIe graphics card, XP pro would make a nice workstation for most business users. Your mileage my vary — Check out the articles page for more ideas.
My hard disk is acting funny and I don’t have any backups—do you guarantee to save my data? No.
Is my data ever safe? No — no technician can ever promise you won’t lose data. Data stored on magnetic media is best described as volatile. The media can become unstable, the data can be corrupted or overwritten, the drive can have a physical failure, etc. Any hard drive containing valuable data must be backed up frequently—preferably at least as frequently as the data is modified.
Do you do data recovery? I will attempt to recover your data at my regular hourly rate, plus the cost of media to store the recovered data. If no data can be recovered there is no charge (it’s basically a yes or no process). If the drive has a hardware failure, you’re pretty much left with OnTrack.
